Twelve new episodes based on Volker Kutscher's crime novel "The Silent Death" will be on display at the end of 2019 at Sky, then in the autumn of 2020 in the ARD, such as Sky Germany, ARD Degeto, WDR, X Films and Beta Film Monday in Berlin announced.
The second case, from a novel in the successful series of young commissioner Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), who left Cologne to settle in Berlin in 1929, plays in the film industry and cinema in 1930, when early sound films made silent films even more competitive. The first 16 episodes of "Babylon Berlin" after Kutscher's novel "The Wet Fish" Sky have already aired in 2017, they ran at ARD and the ORF this fall. "Babylon Berlin" has received the German Television Award, the Grimme Prize, the Bavarian Television Award and, more recently, the Bambi, Best German Television Series.
In addition to Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries appears again in the lead role of Charlotte Ritter. The two are now investigating as a team in the Red Castle, Berlin police headquarters in the Weimar Republic. Lars Eidinger, Fritzi Haberlandt, Léonie Benesch, Jördis Triebel, Thomas Thieme and Hannah Herzsprung are back in the third season. Meret Becker, Sabin Tambrea, Ronald Zehrfeld, Martin Wuttke, Hanno Koffler, Saskia Rosendahl and Peter Jordan are among the novelties of "Babylon Berlin". Peter Kurth – one of the stars of the series of the first two seasons – is no longer badbadinated without success at the head of the Sittendezernats during the last episode.
As directors and writers, Tom Tykwer, Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries are again present. Tykwer ("Lola Runs", "The Warrior and the Empress") emphasized that he always felt novice in the world of series. "The show is really great, the intensity with which it devours you," he said. Once the first two seasons ended, you worked the same way. This should now continue until May, scheduled for 110 days of filming. Filming begins in Berlin, Potsdam-Babelsberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
The 16 episodes of the first two seasons cost nearly 40 million euros. "Silent Death" is now told in just twelve episodes. The costs per episode are of the same order of magnitude as before, the overall costs are proportionately lower, as Michael Polle explains, alongside Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott, one of the producers of X movies.
With an average of about 570,000 viewers per episode, "Babylon Berlin" is considered one of the most successful series of Sky Deutschland. In the first, the series attracted an average of nearly five million viewers. "I've always dreamed of making a series of street sweepers, as I've known him since my childhood," said producer Arndt. This was done with "Babylon Berlin". It remains to be seen if this will work with the third season.
