At the Vienna City Council, the city council decided on Tuesday the budget for the coming year. It generates a turnover of 15,497 billion euros and an expenditure of 15,685 billion euros. The announced debt reduction amounts to 188 million euros. Peter Hanke (SPÖ), president of the City of Finance, promised to launch the debate on Monday, which was a "reversal".
Because 2019 should be the last year in which the city incurs debt. According to the draft budget presented at the end of next year, Vienna will be in the dark with about 6.9 billion euros. The head of department mentioned that Vienna is in the middle of the debt per capita. Nevertheless, he obviously could not convince the opposition in the context of the two-day debate. The FPÖ, the ÖVP and NEOS rejected the figures. As expected, the budget was approved only with the votes of the SPÖ and the Greens.
