The oil industry argues that current fuel prices, despite declining crude oil prices, would result in high import costs. The ÖAMTC Automobile Club doubts this connection.
The price of crude oil has fallen by 26% since early October. However, the ÖAMTC Automobile Club criticizes little the local service stations. Premium gasoline was only one percent cheaper over the same period, diesel even rose three percent more expensive. If we stick to the price of oil, gasoline should be cheaper if we calculate the ÖAMTC on average at least ten cents, and diesel even at 15 cents a liter.
Expensive diesel as an excuse for expensive petrol?
That low prices for crude oil do not reach motorists and oil heating, justifies the oil industry with an increase in import costs. From the point of view of the ÖMTC, however, it was "more than doubtful" whether current prices "result entirely from higher import costs". This suggested price differences between service stations. According to the auto club, the price of diesel in the cheapest gas station is about 19 cents lower than the Austrian average. Such a difference has not been observed throughout the year.
Even with Super doubt, the argument that import costs are higher is appropriate. The previous year, for example, more fuel had been exported than imported, writes the ÖAMTC in a press release. He suspects that high diesel prices are used to keep the price of super high at the same time. So there are petrol stations in Austria, where Super costs more than ten cents cheaper than diesel.
