Philipp Wagenhofer has maintained with EVA SPREITZHOFER
Eva Spreitzhofer (51) is an actress, author and director: "How do we deserve it?" Now in the cinemas.
VOLKSBLATT: The dialogues really seem out of life. How much autobiographical is there in this story?
EVA SPREITZHOFER: These are definitely removed from life. In a way, I am this Wanda. I have two girls, 18 and 20 years old, who have read and corrected my script repeatedly: "Mega says no one, Mom". There is a model for all the characters in the movie. I have done a lot of research. The most absurd things are actually anyway.
Did your girls at puberty tend to rebel against Islam?
No, but at the beginning of the story, I thought it was one of the scariest things I could imagine if they said they joined Islam. Not so much because it is Islam, but because my children have abandoned some values that I consider important. These are feminist rather than religious aspects. I do not care what they believe in, but the image of the woman that they have is important to me.
Especially the level of religion should be considered very differentiated, cross, burka and kippa. These external symbols are very underlined … How hard is it to be balanced here?
In principle, I do not find it difficult, because I do not want to make a balanced film. I wanted to look at people, opinions and attitudes with a little irony. Also self-deprecating – that you make fun of how these things are seen. This would require more humor, but this is becoming less and less possible right at the Muslim-reactionary border. With laughter, you can treat the subject very well.
An intelligent gesture is to communicate the subject through comedy. As a result, you can be more cheeky and avoid detailed explanations. Do you agree? Do you like juggling prejudices?
Of course. If you look at "Brian's life", how good are those who deal with such things are insolent. After the launch of the film, incredible events took place. In religion, the sound of some people seems amusing. I do not think so
In the film, the mother of the 16-year-old converted daughter is much more affected than Papa Harald. Why?
I do not feel like that … The father does not seem like a lot. What Harald does in the background, we do not learn this way, because Wanda is the main character.
How do Muslims and Muslims find your film dealing with "pure" and "impure" aspects of women?
I've had a lot of consultants, I've also built insider jokes, it works. I believe that the majority of Muslims and Muslims are not radical believers, but laymen. Catholics do not necessarily represent the pope's opinion. There are many people for whom it is funny.
The mosaic family in the film covers so many facets of life in common, is it an author?
I live in a patchwork situation, but I think that traditional family members know these things as well. In the end, people who belong to the same family but have different interests meet. For a comedy, a patchwork situation works well because they are complex structures.
They perform the wonderful Caroline Peters (Nestroy's best actress), Simon Schwarz, but also personalities like Mijou Friesz. Was there a lot of available budget or is it just based on your good network?
The film has been budgeted quite normally, where for small roles, there is not much money available. That's why I've also been using people like Doron Rabinovici and Robert Stachel from Maschek, with whom I'm a friend.
Until now, they have been actress and author. Have you felt a wick now? Will you be a leader in the future?
Yes, I certainly will not have a book written by another director. The exit is just more exciting for me if I do it myself.
