It is said that the story is told by three characters 15 years after that of "The Handmaid's Tale". In the 1985 novel, the United States was transformed into a largely sterile society by nuclear shocks, environmental disasters, and mutant diseases.
In this climate, the United States is being rebuilt in Gilead, a totalitarian and Christian fundamentalist state where women have no rights. It tells the story of a young woman who must serve as a slave at birth.
"The Handmaid's Tale" has become a clbadic of the English language and has gained new popularity in recent years in the face of debates on women's rights.
According to Atwood, the inspiration for the sequel is "the world we live in".
In 2017, the book was shot with Elizabeth Moss in the lead role of the series and received some brilliant reviews. The red and white dresses features of the series have also appeared repeatedly in protests for women's rights, most recently before the appointment of the new Republican Supreme Judge Brett Kavanaugh, accused of badual badault.
