Assassination in southern Afghanistan: the police chief killed by gunfire, the US general is unscathed

Shortly before the elections, an attack shows how unstable the security situation in Afghanistan is. The chief of police and the intelligence officer of Kandahar were shot dead. The new commander of NATO was only a few meters away.

In Kandahar, capital of the southern province of Afghanistan, General Abdul Rasik, chief of the influential police in the province of the same name, was killed. This was confirmed by the Afghan army chief of staff, Mohammed Sharif Jaftali. An badbadin opened fire after a high-level meeting on security for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Kandahar intelligence chief Abdul Momin Hussein Chel was also killed and provincial governor Zulmai Wesa was wounded.

The new NATO Commander in Afghanistan, General Scott Austin Miller, also attended the meeting. He remained unscathed, said the military alliance.

"Hard to replace"

The badailant was clearly one of the governor's bodyguards. He should have been killed. The radical Islamist Taliban took responsibility for the attack. For extremists, it's a big hit just before the elections.

Rasik was one of the most influential men in Kandahar. According to Thomas Ruttig, Afghan expert on the Afghan badysts' network, Rasik was more than the chief of police in Kandahar. The Americans would have notably engaged in the fight against the Taliban. "It will be difficult to replace, there is no suitable successor visible," said Ruttig dpa.

Rasik had survived several murder attempts in the past. He was known for his fight against insurgents in Kandahar and controlled the province with a hard hand. He has also been repeatedly accused of human rights violations.

The attack took place two days before Saturday's legislative elections. During the election campaign, Taliban fighters launched repeated attacks to prevent the vote.
