The Management elections indicated that the turnout was 80.49%. On the spot, however, the observers could not confirm it. In many polling stations in the capital, Phnom Penh, we have hardly seen voters.

Hun Sen ruled Cambodia for over 30 years, making him the world's oldest chief of government. Last year, the main opposition party was banned, its president was arrested for treason. He was just below Hun Sen in previous elections in 2013. The other political parties are not particularly critical of the government. ASEAN representatives said the elections were held in "a highly repressive political atmosphere".

Voting is the sixth election since 1993, when decades of war ended. During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, about 1.7 million people were killed between 1975 and 1979.

The first results were expected later in the day. The final official result should not be available until mid-August.
