After five years of trial for the National Socialist Underground (NSU) murders, there was a verdict on Wednesday morning against the five accused. The 43-year-old accused, Beate Zschäpe, was sentenced to one-tenth murder. The Munich Higher Regional Court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court also noted the particular gravity of the guilt of the right-wing terrorist
The court followed with the verdict of the recommendation of the federal prosecutor. Zschäpe has been accused of complicity in ten murders, two bombings and fifteen robberies by the NSU. However, due to the particular severity of the guilt found by the court, Zschäpe can only be released after 15 years in exceptional cases, such as old age or serious illness. If the request of a person sentenced for a waiver of the remainder of the sentence is refused, it may be resumed every two years.
Zschäpe showed signs of remorse only in the latter stages of the trial and left behind NSU crimes. She had claimed to have always learned of the actions of her two friends, who had taken the life of the 2011 National Socialist Underground (NSU) after the disarmament of the National Socialist Underground (NSU).
The defenders, however, saw no complicity Zschäpes in these acts of violence, They also denied the presentation of the accusation that Zschäpe had formed the NSU terrorist cell with Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt. According to the defense, the 43-year-old man was essentially punishable only for arson on the last hiding place of the trio. For this, they demanded a maximum sentence of imprisonment of ten years.
The co-accused Ralf Wohlleben also made a harsh judgment, as a pimp he had to stay behind bars for ten years. The court found him guilty of complicity in murder. The co-defendant Holger G. was sentenced to three years in prison. He admitted having once handed over a weapon to the NSU trio and helped infiltration with forged documents. Co-accused Andre E. was jailed for two and a half years. He was convicted only of supporting a terrorist group, but not helping an attempted murder.
The verdict was expected with much enthusiasm after five years and more than 430 days of trial. The prosecution had accused Zschäpfe of complicity in ten murders, two bombings and fifteen thefts by the NSU
The defenders, however, see no complicity of Zschäpes in these acts of violence. They also dispute the presentation of the accusation that Zschäpe formed the NSU with Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt. According to the defense, the 43-year-old man is essentially punishable only for arson on the last hiding place of the trio. For this, they demanded a maximum sentence of imprisonment of ten years.
The accused and their judgments
BEATE ZSCHÄPE (43) was sentenced to life imprisonment. The German Federal Prosecution accused him of complicity in all the crimes of the NSU. There were nine racially motivated murders of the "Ceska" series, the murder of police officer Michele Kiesewetter, two bombings with explosive bombs with many wounded and more than one. a dozen robberies. Zschäpe still wants to hear about the murders and attacks of his two friends Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt. She confessed to setting fire to the last apartment of the trio in Zwickau in 2011. The prosecution also considers that it is an attempt to murder a neighbor and to two craftsmen. The defenders of Zschäpe see only a simple arson, their lawyers at least a particularly serious arson. Zschäpe has been in detention since November 2011.
Zschäpe's trusted lawyers demanded a sentence of imprisonment of less than ten years for arson and for aiding and abetting several robberies. Their initial defense lawyers wanted immediate release because the expected crime of the fire with the pre-trial detention of more than six years was already settled.
RALF WOHLLEBEN (43) was also in detention. He was sentenced to ten years in prison for murder. The prosecution accused the former NDP leader of having organized the "Ceska" type weapon – and he knew what Mundlos and Böhnhardt wanted to do with it. Wohlleben denies it, he gave only one tip to the bearer of the weapon. The prosecution had claimed twelve years in prison for helping murder in nine cases. His supporters described him as innocent and demanded acquittal.
CARSTEN S. (38) was also charged with murder as a murderer in nine cases, was sentenced to three years after juvenile justice. He handed over the "Ceska" to a demolition house in Chemnitz in Böhnhardt and Mundlos, which lived underground with Zschäpe at the time. Shortly after flying over the NSU, he was arrested and confessed widely. He overwhelmed Wohlleben. The court positively badessed his educational aid and his own admission of guilt. The defense had demanded an acquittal – S. had not known anything about the planned killings of the NSU. Several members of the NSU victims acknowledged in the process the remorse of S. – and forgiven him by his own admission. S. was free. It was considered endangered and is part of a witness protection program.
ANDRE E. (38) maintained contact with the clandestine trio, according to Zschäpe, until the very end. E. Zschäpe helped their brief escape after the deaths of their friends Mundlos and Böhnhardt. He remained silent during the process. He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for supporting a terrorist group. The federal prosecutor's office had required twelve years in prison for E. E. A, according to the conviction, the prosecutor rented a camper, with the perpetrators drove for a bomb attack in Cologne. In addition, he helped camouflage the trio NSU on the subway. Shortly after the plea of mid-September, the court issued an arrest warrant against E., who had already been released. His defense lawyers demanded the acquittal of all charges.
HOLGER G. (44), previously a fugitive, admitted to having once handed over a weapon to the NSU trio and helped infiltration with false papers. He was sentenced to three years in prison. The federal prosecutor's office has asked for five years to support a terrorist group. Defenders argued against a sentence of "less than two years", but did not file a specific criminal complaint.
Great rush in the court
Several hours before the conviction in the lawsuit NSU against the alleged right-wing German terrorists already formed a long line of waiting in the Higher Regional Court of Munich . Protesters held banners with inscriptions like "How much is in the NSU?" There were strict security precautions around the court. Around seven o'clock in the morning, about 150 people were already waiting in the forecourt, some were there since Tuesday night. Only 50 spectators were allowed in the room.
The German campaign "Kein Schlussstrich" announced protests against the end of court proceedings. The deficits in the investigation of crimes NSU are criticized. At 9.30 am, the convictions against Beate Zschäpe and the four accused, suspected terrorists, must be handed down. Representatives of Muslim organizations also called for a new review of NSU terror immediately before the announcement of the verdict
