According to media reports, at least seven people were killed in violent demonstrations against a projected increase in fuel prices in Haiti. They had been killed in looting in Grand Port-au-Prince, the HPN news agency reported yesterday. The police also talked about the deaths, but did not give a precise figure.
Many people had previously protested a sharp rise in gas prices. Protesters burned the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, ransacked shops, attacked hotels and set fire to cars, reported the Metropole radio station. Isolated shots were fired.
Violent demonstrations also took place in other cities. The country's airports were closed. The government withdrew the price increase up to 50 percent thereafter for the time being. "We condemn violence and vandalism," writes Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant on Twitter. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The state of the Caribbean is largely dependent on foreign aid, with widespread corruption and violence.
