EU Ministers of Transport and Environment are meeting today, Monday and Tuesday, for an informal Council of Ministers in Graz. One topic will be Monday of today, change of time. This is a first sampling: when and how do EU states want to implement the announced decision for summer and winter? It is primarily a question of whether the respective states wish to keep the winter time or the time of the previous summer. The EU is waiting for a decision from each state by April. It has already been said that the change of time could then be removed in the coming year.
Such rapid implementation is not an option, Transport Minister Norbert Hofer (FPÖ), responsible for ORF Radio in Austria, said on Monday. Hofer believes that the implementation is "too ambitious for the coming year," he said in the Ö1 Morgenjournal. It was important not to get a "carpet at the cut of time" and look for a standard as uniform as possible in the EU. It takes time to vote, next year probably will not be, "said Hofer.
In an online survey conducted in early autumn 2018, the EU Commission surveyed EU citizens about the biannual pbad, over 80% of those surveyed wishing to end the change of time. However, participation in the survey was quite low.
"Graz Declaration" as a goal
In addition to Ministers of the Environment Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP) and Transport, Norbert Hofer (FPÖ), European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc will participate in the informal Council. On Tuesday, the environment and transport ministers hold an informal European Council of Ministers for the first time. The aim of the EU's Joint Council of Ministers is the adoption of the "Graz Declaration", which must be based on the Paris climate goals.
The police took many security measures for the meeting. Styrian forces as well as personnel from other federal states are used. EU ministers will also have their own security personnel. There is no available space in the immediate vicinity of the conference center in the congress center of Graz.
