The plebiscite in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia about the independence of France is clearly no. On the group of Pacific Islands, the first results of opponents to independence were clearly ahead.

In total, about 175,000 people were eligible to vote. The referendum was originally scheduled to take place in 1998, but has been postponed several times. According to all surveys, the population of Kanakas – indigenous people of New Caledonia – is in favor of a breakaway. Today, however, they represent just under 40% of the population.
