The Hohe Tauern National Park covers the Federated States of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol over an area of ​​about 1,800 square kilometers. On 21 October 1981, the first Austrian National Park was created with the agreement of the three countries. It is also the largest national park of Austria and the Central European Alps. Efforts to put the "Hohen Tauern" under special protection were already in place in 1910.

With glacier fields of more than 130 square kilometers and impressive valley ends, there are approximately 1,000 different landowners – especially private landowners – for a national park whose property is unusual. The "Austrian Alpine Club" has about a quarter of the area, the "Federal Forestry" about 20 square kilometers.

The highest peaks are the Grossglockner with 3,798 meters and the Großvenediger with 3,662 meters. In total, there are more than 300 mountain peaks in the cultural landscape with over 3,000 meters, 342 glaciers, 279 streams, 26 major waterfalls and 551 mountain lakes. The "Krimml waterfalls", the glacier trail "Innergschlöss" in Matrei and the "Franz-Josefs-Höhe" in Großglockner are among the most popular. The area can be crossed completely by the alpine route Großglockner.

The national park "Hohe Tauern" aims to protect endangered species and is considered worldwide as a recognized experience in terms of nature conservation. One-third of all plant species present in Austria are here. Around 10,000 different species live in the "Hohe Tauern". The concept of protection developed also corresponds to the badessments of the World Conservation Union. Hohe Tauern National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been recognized by the World Conservation Union since 2006.
