The Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia is known to have attacked a bus in Egypt that killed at least seven Coptic Christians and injured many others. The bus was returning from the Coptic Monastery of St. Samuel, located 260 km south of Cairo, told Reuters news agency on Friday, the Archbishop of Minya, Anba Makarious.
The archbishop spoke of 14 dead and 14 wounded, while the official MENA news agency counted the number of wounded with seven. The attack took place near the place where 28 Christians were killed in May 2017 by Islamist extremists during a similar attack. The extremist militia has recovered the act for itself. However, there is no evidence of this in the confessions posted on their Amaq Internet Voice Mail.
Strong attack on Coptic Christians
According to the authorities, it is the worst attack against the Coptic minority in more than a year. Fighters close to the IS repeatedly attack Christians. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the victims of the attacks as a martyr and stressed his determination to fight militant groups. "I reaffirm our determination to fight against black terrorism and persecute the guilty," he said via Twitter. Egypt said fighting Islamist militants was a security priority after years of turmoil.
The Egyptian Coptic Christian minority, which represents 10% of the population, is a frequent target of aggression and persecution in Egypt.
