Istanbul will have a new airport on October 29 – at least symbolically. The opening coincides with the 95th anniversary of Turkey. But the prestige project is not over yet. The airport, still unknown, will become the largest airport in the world. The new airport area is expected to be 11,000 football fields. Once the work is completed, 200 million pbadengers must be treated each year, says the director of the airport, Samsunlu. To date, around € 10.5 million has been invested by private funds in the construction project. The Turkish state should not incur any additional costs, says the airport manager. Critics, however, doubt that this bill works. The gigantic construction project is controversial in many ways. For example, many work-related deaths have overshadowed construction. In addition, the ground must be filled with craters – a finished track has already lost several meters. At the end of December, Atatürk airport will be fully transferred to its new premises. The rail link needed to get to the city center at a distance of 40 km does not exist yet.
