Italy: 17 dead and millions of trees felled after a storm

Since last Sunday, there are strong storms in Italy. Several people died of falling trees, a German tourist was killed by lightning in Sardinia, a second person died in a hospital a few days ago after a thunderbolt a few days ago.

A spokeswoman for the Italian Civil Protection announced that 17 deaths had been reported following the storms. The Association of Italian Agricultural Societies Coldiretti declared that the storms had destroyed about 14 million trees; many in northern Italy.

The head of civil protection, Angelo Borrelli, said Saturday in Belluno, in northern Italy, in the province of Veneto, that the entire population was suffering. But the situation in Veneto was particularly bad. These are "apocalyptic" scenes, said Borrelli.

In the Alps near Belluno, pines and spruces curled like matches. Villages and roads in the Trentino and Veneto regions were cut by landslides.

Most squares and alleys in Venice have been flooded by the greatest floods of the decade. In many parts of the city, tourists have no choice but to cross the flood with rubber boots or use footbridges.
