Rome (APA) – On Wednesday, the Italian government won a vote of confidence with regard to the controversial security and immigration package of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. Cabinet maintained its vote of confidence in the Senate with 163 votes to 59. Nine senators abstained. The package still needs to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies.
Some parliamentarians of the five – star populist movement who ruled with the Lega in Rome have tabled dozens of amendments to protest the planned reinforcement. The government asked Tuesday for a vote of confidence to speed up the project. The five-star senators announced that they would abstain during the vote to avoid the break-up of the coalition.
Deputy head of the far right Lega predicts a drastic tightening of the right of migration. According to the will of the government, the granting of humanitarian residence permits should be mbadively limited. The government also wants to regulate the distribution and placement of asylum seekers. Most will be hosted in large reception centers in the future.
