SPÖ's constitutional spokesman Peter Wittmann spoke of a "scandal within the Judiciary Committee: commission chair Michaela Steinacker (ÖVP) prevented Justice Minister Josef Moser (ÖVP) from responding to his question on the "Enabling Law" regarding the reform of the health insurance system, he sees the reduced parliamentary rights – and will address a request to the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP).
The Minister of Justice, Moser, is also responsible for the constitution – and the SPÖ is convinced that the proposed regulation, providing for "preparatory acts" of the Minister of Social Affairs to authorize the reform of health insurance before their decision is unconstitutional. Therefore, Wittmann wanted to question the minister Wednesday afternoon before the Judiciary Committee. But Steinacker prevented that "by simply not letting the minister answer the question".
"I have lived a lot in the National Council, but what has happened recently on the government side – breaking all parliamentary rules and customs and restricting the rights of the opposition – goes beyond all standards, "Wittmann criticized in a press release. The policy of the ÖVP and FPÖ contributes to the weakening of parliamentarism, democracy and the rule of law.
