Because their flags are often confused, New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State, Winston Peters, called on Australia to seek a new flag. Australia copied the New Zealand flag, Peters said to TVNZ

"They should change their flag and accept the fact that we had the design first," Peters said. Nationalist party leader, New Zealand First, represents Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of the New Zealand Labor Party as prime minister during his six-week parental leave

The New Zealand flag, officially inaugurated in 1902, has four red stars forming the constellation of the Cross. South, and – as a former British colony – the Union Jack in the upper left corner.

The Australian flag is also an honor for the Union Jack. Only in this case there are six white stars. Five of them also represent the Southern Cross in its current form, officially since 1954, but a similar version since 1901.

Two years ago, New Zealand was looking for a new flag in an elaborate campaign . The winning design with the silver fern and the Southern Cross on a blue and black background, however, failed in a referendum. The majority of New Zealanders preferred to keep the old flag.
