US Secretary of State Pompeo negotiated with North Korea the promised disarmament. From the country now foreclosed come allegations that the former CIA chief acted like a gangster. What went wrong?
S eoul / Tokyo (dpa) – A few weeks after the spectacular summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the rapprochement between the two countries was stifled.
Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo in Pyongyang accused the North Korean Foreign Ministry of the US side of a "gangster thinking" before. At the same time, he warned against the failure of talks on the disarmament of North Korean nuclear weapons. Pompeo dismissed the sharp reaction and spoke of "progress on almost all central issues."
The reason the badessment of the meeting was so different was initially unclear. Pompeo said after returning from North Korea to Tokyo, "there was no contradiction when we talked about the scope of denuclearization." Referring to the request of North America, the head of the American diplomacy said: the world is a gangster. There was a unanimous decision at the UN Security Council on what needed to be done.

Pompeo spoke at a press conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung Wha and Japanese colleague Taro Kono. Pompeo had briefed the two on his talks with representatives of North Korea's isolated international leaders on Friday and Saturday. On his third visit to North Korea in a few months, Pompeo convened Kim Yong Chol, a former senior party official and former chief of secret services, a close adviser to Kim Jong Un.

Washington hopes to agree with Pyongyang on a detailed disarmament schedule.
