Qualcomm had presented to the public its current top chipset Snapdragon 855 until last December. The SoC is used by many leading smartphone models, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, the LG G8S ThinQ or the Asus ZenFone 6. Now, Qualcomm announces an improved version of the Snapdragon 855 that aims to provide more performance for the 5G, AI, games and XR (Cross Reality). By the second half of 2019, the first devices equipped with the new chipset should appear on the market.
The changes compared to the clbadic Snapdragon 855 are however limited. The Plus version therefore operates with a slightly higher clock frequency, up to 2.96 GHz. The base clocked at 2.84 GHz is only slightly slower. At the same time, the Adreno 640 integrated graphics processor should provide 15% more power.
Highly graphics-intensive AR and VR applications and games should benefit from increased graphics performance. The required data can be retrieved from the Snapdragon 855 Plus via 5G with the already known X50 modem or traditionally via 4G (X24).
All in all, the new version of the SoC is expected to deliver marginal performance benefits, fueling incentives to purchase new high-end models in the second half of 2019. A possible candidate for the Snapdragon 855 Plus might be the Samsung's new Galaxy Note 10, for example. The high-end Korean phablet is traditionally equipped with the latest processors.
