Never before have we counted as many seal puppies in the Wadden Sea as this year. During the summer, a total of 9 285 newborns were registered, said Thursday the joint secretariat of the Wadden Sea based in Wilhelmshaven. The animals were counted throughout the Wadden Sea, from Denmark to the Netherlands. Only in the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony and Neuwerk, an island based in Hamburg, there were 2,158 puppies, about 2% less than the year before. In return, the number of adult seals increased by 10% to 8,058.

Since 1974, the animal populations of aircraft are recorded every year, he said. Together, about 27,000 seals were counted. However, since all animals are never counted on sandbanks at the same time, the experts estimated their total number at 40,000. The new figures show that, overall, seals in the Wadden Sea are well.

The Wadden Sea has been a World Heritage Site since 2009. It is the largest contiguous natural landscape in Central Europe. It is therefore ranked equally on UNESCO's list alongside natural resources such as Yellowstone National Park in the United States or Serengeti in Africa. It is largely preserved in its original state and offers more than 10,000 species of animals, plants and micro-organisms a unique habitat. (EPD)
