Disastrous ended the night of All Saints' Day for seven residents of a multi-party house in Holzhausen, in the district of Wels-Land. A fire destroyed the west wing of the old farmhouse where rental apartments are located. "The inhabitants have lost almost everything," said Holzhauser Mayor Klaus Hügelsberger (VP) during the conversation at OÖN. "The important thing is that not everyone was hurt."

One of the residents noticed the smoke and flames and alerted the fire department around 5.30am. Then he took all his neighbors out of the apartments, the other five tenants were able to escape outside. A seventh renter was not home at that time, but was on vacation.

Broken roof farm

"When we arrived near the object to fire, the roof of the house has already burned," says Christoph Eichinger, head of the mission, the fire department of Holzhausen, during the conversation at OÖN. A total of eight fire brigades from the districts of Wels-Land and Linz-Land were deployed with about 90 men and 14 vehicles. Despite their quick intervention, the attic could no longer be saved. The fire was quickly under control. The work of extinction lasted several hours.

The experts have been intensely searching for the cause of the fire yesterday. Locals already suspected that the fire had been caused by tealights in a hollowed Halloween pumpkin. This badumption has been confirmed by the experts of the State Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Fire Prevention Bureau. As a result, the flames of the candles attacked the wooden panels of the conservatory. Initially, a technical defect had also been considered as the cause of the fire.

Quick help for renters

The tenants now homeless could count yesterday on the help of their fellow citizens. "Some are living with relatives, two with a farmer, and for the most affected couple, we are simply looking for a vacant apartment," said Mayor Hügelsberger.
