LINZ. 1269 candidates tried their luck in the medical study test yesterday in Linz.

Simon Link sits against a pillar in the lobby of the Linz Design Center. In his hand, he holds a bottle of water, his gaze sweeps off – away from the bustle of the Design Center, where 1269 candidates nervously wait for the entrance. They all want to study medicine in Linz starting in the autumn.

The 19-year-old traveled for more than eight hours on the train from Heidelberg. He is one of 543 Germans trying their luck here even though only 45 of the 180 places are reserved for them. In their home country, only high school graduates with the highest grades to study have a chance. Link has studied computer science up to now and now wants to rearrange it: "As a doctor, you can make people happy." He imagines himself studying 600 kilometers from his homeland: "Linz is a beautiful city".

Two-thirds of women participated

For Welser David Weber, the distance does not matter. He is trying it for the third time. "I've always wanted to study medicine, becoming a doctor is the dream of my life." Until now, the 21-year-old has made a teaching degree in English and Biology: "But that's not for me." Now it should work, he finds: "All good things come in threes."

The test was held yesterday in Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck and Linz at the same time. The 12,600 candidates from Austria have asked for 1,680 seats. Knowledge has been tested in mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry and social skills. The number of participants rose from 932 the previous year to 1,269 in Linz, not only because of the increase in the number of students from 120 to 180, says Meinhard Lukas, rector of the university. Kepler University: "The Linzer Medizin- Studies have been established and there is a lot of positive feedback from students." Especially striking among the 700 Austrian candidates: two-thirds are women.

Meanwhile, the noise has shifted into the interior of the Design Center. In the huge hall are divided into 30 sectors divided 750 tables, where row by row the candidates are sitting.
