On Friday, in the Lesachtal, there was a mbadive rock fall that nearly hit 40 army soldiers. As Mayor Johann Windbichler reports, the soldiers heard the thunder of rocks coming off and could scarcely escape to safety. An army vehicle was hit hard.
"The army was working towards Maria Luggau before the demolition point of the main road," said Windbichler. On the slope above, the huge rocks have dissolved. "It was very critical, it could have killed people." After the incident, the special teams were removed from the site, Windbichler: "The falling rocks are the next big danger we have now, and that is happening now more." The slopes have been softened, the trees upside down. Rain has also resumed, reports the mayor. "The slopes are moving."
The population of the valley, isolated from the outside world for nearly a week, is tense but calm, said Windbichler. "The Lesachtals are always used to being locked up again and again, it's a tense rest, no hysteria – as long as we have no injuries, that's the most important thing – people stay at home as best as they can. " He himself has known catastrophic situations since his tenure as fire chief, according to the mayor. "You just need to set priorities step by step."
Meanwhile, the feeding continues. "We now have an island supply of emergency generators." Windbichler predicts that it will take another three to four days before all the inhabitants of the Lesachtal Valley have electricity again. The huge damage in the valley worries him. He calls on the authorities to finance the reconstruction of the valley.
