The United Nations cultural organization, Unesco, said the traditional Korean struggle constituted the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The wrestling – called North Korea Ssirum, Ssireum South Korea – is both a national sport and a popular cultural practice that has for all Koreans a deep meaning, said Monday the Unesco.
There is also an important political context: North Korea and South Korea have united for the implementation. This is an "unprecedented" and a "not symbolic step" towards reconciliation between Korean states, said the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.

This was the first of several decisions that the competent committee of Unesco will take until Saturday. Cultural forms such as Jamaican reggae music and perfume production in France should also be declared intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Austria is involved in an application for the blueprint, the age-old technique of finishing the textile. The nomination was submitted jointly with Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Together with Switzerland, Austria has also shared its knowledge of avalanche hazard management.
In total, according to UNESCO, nearly 50 cultural forms have recently been proposed as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Up to now, 470 living traditions from the fields of dance, theater, music, oral traditions, natural knowledge and craft techniques have been included. These include, for example, the construction and organ music in Germany, the tango of Argentina and Uruguay and traditional Chinese medicine.
