Vienna. After years of decline, the number of students has increased slightly in 2017/18 for the second time in a row. According to Statistics Austria, about 1,300,000 students were registered 1,800 more than in the previous year, which is explained by the high immigration in 2015 and 2016, according to a press release.

Since the early 2000s, the number of pupils has decreased in primary schools: Visited in 2000/01, there remained approximately 394,586 children in a primary school; in 2010/11, they were only 328,000 (minus 17%). It is only in 2016/17 that this number has further increased significantly (to 336,000). In 2017/18, there were already 339,000 primary school students (plus 1.1% compared to the previous year). According to current demographic forecasts, the number of primary school students is expected to increase at least over the next eleven years.

The second winner in the number of students is less likely to be linked to immigration: at the AHS sub-levels, nearly 120,000 students (plus 1.5%) were registered, a new record. The reason is that despite the reduced number of primary school students, more and more children of this type of school. By comparison, there are now 174 children in secondary schools (expired) and new colleges for every 100 students in the lower AHS level, up from 212 ten years ago.

Number of vocational education students declining

In contrast, development has been observed in secondary schools and NMS: barely reached, despite nearly 208,000 students after a slight increase the previous year, the lowest level recorded in 2015/16 for 50 years and even lower .

The higher years of AHS increased again slightly in 2017/18: with just over 92,000 students, they reached a new record (plus 0.3%). Conversely, secondary vocational schools (BHS) had to accept a slight decline to reach nearly 144,000 youth (minus 1.2%). As a single branch, primary and social education institutions recorded growth (over 0.4%), with the largest losses recorded by commercial secondary schools (especially commercial academies) ( minus 2.5%). They have lost just under 16% of their students since 2007/08.

The number of 115,000 students in vocational training also continues to decline (down 0.7% from the previous year and down 16% from 2007/08). For the moment, however, the downward trend in medium-sized vocational schools has stopped. Here, the number of students stagnated at 44,000 – compared to 2007/08, this still means less than 15%.
