The controversial president of constitutional protection, Hans-Georg Maaßen, has officially resigned. German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has signed a document that puts the senior official in temporary retirement, the German press agency said Thursday. First, the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" spoke about it.

Germany's Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) announced Monday the transfer of his position to temporary retirement. As justification, he stated that the manuscript of a farewell speech issued the previous day contained "unacceptable formulations". For this reason, trustful cooperation is no longer possible.

In a speech delivered on 18 October to the audience of the international intelligence services, Maaßen expressed himself in accordance with the manuscript of "SPD left-wing forces", who wanted to provoke a break-up of the grand coalition after the events from Chemnitz. Maaßen is described as a critic of a "naive and left-wing foreign and security policy".

According to "SZ", Maaßen now receives, for a maximum period of three years, 71.75% of her previous salary, then her pension, calculated according to the number of years of service.

The former MP for Mabadens, Thomas Haldenwang, was initially entrusted to the management of the office. Seehofer wants to express his own political future only after swearing in the Bavarian government next Monday.
