As the construction companies' offers are too expensive for the Wiener Linien, the construction and opening of the U2 / U5 metro line will be postponed for about a year. This also has an impact on the planned two-year U2 partial barrier between Schottentor and Karlsplatz.

The construction of the new U2 / U5 metro line is coming to a halt: Wiener Linien's managing director, Günter Steinbauer, announced on Friday the delay in reporting journalists from nine months to one year. As a reason, Steinbauer called "unacceptable offers" of construction companies as part of a tender.

U2 / U5-Linienkreuz in Vienna goes back about a year

More specifically, it is a set of quality services for the construction of the new U5 line between Frankhplatz and the new Rathaus service station. "After 30 years of experience, we know very well what a tunnel counter should cost," explained the head of the company. For the call for tenders, the results were "neither plausible nor justifiable". As a result, they decided to launch a new tender with a slightly modified framework and therefore more trading room.

To avoid that the same problem also arises with the important tunnel drive of the Matzleinsdorfer site towards Neubaugbade – for the southern extension of U2 – the Viennese lines have decided to rework this call for tender a new times and only later instead of the one planned in the next days rauszugeben.

The offers of construction companies are too expensive

Due to the boom in the construction industry, builders are currently facing high prices throughout Austria, Steinbauer said. Of course, he did not want to reveal how much the offers were too expensive from Wiener Linien's point of view: "Calling sums here would be like putting poker cards on the table while playing poker. . " Which companies are left? also a secret. It is clear that orders are worth hundreds of millions of euros.

"It was not appropriate," said Steinbauer, "to adhere to the schedule with stubbornness," he expects construction delays will be felt one by one on the completion and completion of the project. Opening of the new sections Assuming a change of one year, the U5 would not drive until 2025 (instead of 2024) until the Frankhplatz, the U2 only from 2027 (instead of from 2026) to the Matzleinsdorfer Platz.

The partial suspension of U2 also comes a year later

The delay in the construction of the new U2 / U5 lines also affects the planned two-year partial barrier U2 between Schottentor and Karlsplatz. This was expected from the summer of 2019, but changes will only begin in 2020, promised Steinbauer. When exactly, is not yet solved. Because this is directly related to the progress of these two offers, it results in a delay in the construction of the cross line U2 / U5.

Where Steinbauer could win the next lock, quite positive aspects. Because the U2 coin does not have to be paid at the same time as the U4, which will not be fixed between July and August next year between Karlsplatz and Längenfeldgbade.

The Pilgramgbade station is not respected for about a year from February. The reason is the big conversion work, which is necessary because here, the extended U2 will cross the U4. This work would continue despite the general delays – as well as various preparatory works according to the new lines U2 and U5, he said.

Reflection time for the new route on the 13A bus line

As the southern branch of Matzleinsdorfer Platz's purple line should be tunneled only later, there is also more time to think about the new 13A routing, a lively debate. He can no longer cross the Kirchengbade for several years because of the necessary construction equipment in the direction of the Alser / Skodagbade road and must therefore resort to an alternative route. We know that's what's been going on for months, because Wiener Linien and the district of Neubau have different ideas.

Steinbauer said today that he wanted to cross the Neubaugbade, as this would be the simplest variant: "It's about moving two Schanigärten". However, the district does not wish it, which is why it no longer gives this solution any chance.

Another possibility would be a diversion on the carnation and the Zollergbade or on the Stift and the Siebensterngbade. The latter option poses the problem of the narrowness of the Siebensterngbade for articulated buses and the presence of the 49er on the way, which complicates the respect of the schedule. A 13A division wants to avoid the Wiener Linien in all cases. While the bus will then drive, but the policy has to decide, so the chef Wiener Linien.
