Upper Austria's green spaces should be free of chemicals

Bring the smell of nature into his own garden and thus live a healthier life: many top Austrians pursue this goal. Provincial Councilor Max Hiegelsberger (VP), who launched the "Nature in the Garden" campaign, said: "We want to persuade Gartler to do without chemical pesticides."

In the first half of 2018, there were already around 1,250 Gartler, who made use of this free service, Hiegelsberger pleased with the success of the garden phone. In 2017, there were 1,800 calls throughout the year. "The questions range from conception to plant diseases and ecological pest control," says Hiegelsberger

. The garden phone is part of several garden cooperations between Upper and Lower Austria. "Above all, transnational cooperation should lead to a transfer of knowledge and exchange of experiences," says Martin Eichtinger (VP), State Councilor for International Relations in Lower Austria. To do this, a combined ticket office is planned for the upcoming Landesgartenschauen in both Länder.

Another common action is "Nature in the Garden Communities". In 2019, the state garden exhibition of Upper Austria in Aigen-Schlägl (Rohrbach District) is full. Rohrbach was therefore chosen as the trial district for the pilot project. Seven communities have already received the "Nature in the Garden Community" certificate. "In the coming years, the project must be extended to the whole of Upper Austria," says Hiegelsberger. Aigen-Schlägl is a commune certified since 2016. The mayor Elisabeth Höfler (VP) wishes to encourage the population to create natural gardens. "Our community workers will learn in Lower Austria to refrain from chemistry in garden design." Hiegelsberger wants to do without pesticides in public green spaces in the future. (pepo)
