Verdict: Interspar gift cards must be valid for more than three years
VIENNA. Under current legislation, vouchers must remain valid for 30 years unless there are good reasons to reduce them.
According to a complaint by Verein für Konsumenteninformation (VKI) Interspar, the following has been found: The Salzburg Regional Court has not authorized the validity of their rechargeable gift cards to three years. The judgment is not final.
The VKI had brought an action on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs because the gift card was only valid "up to three years". But the shorter the period in which a voucher loses validity is short, "the more the justification must be valid", explains Joachim Kogelmann, a lawyer at VKI. The Salzburg Regional Court held that the shortening of the validity period to three years was "seriously disadvantageous" and also did not allow security problems to make the three-year period necessary.
In addition, the subsequent extension does not help, "the court is like the VKI's opinion that the average consumer of the credit surrender will be withheld if the validity of the card according to the rules is already expired, "he wrote in a VKI statement, Interspar appealed the verdict.
