Kabul. A violent explosion rocked Kabul on Monday. A police officer told AFP that he had seen ten to 15 dead or wounded on the ground at the scene of the blast. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the explosion occurred in front of a downtown school.

Not far away, many protesters had previously protested attacks by radical Islamist Taliban against members of a minority Shiite group.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Kabul on Sunday night, including students. They called for better protection of the Shiite minority Hasara. The protest continued on Monday. The minority is still targeted by Sunni Taliban attacks.

On Monday, the Afghan army sent additional troops to two districts in Ghazni province, in the south-east of the country, which is mainly populated by the Hasara minority. The Hasara fighters and the Afghan army have been fighting the Taliban in Jaghori and Malistan since last Wednesday. Police said 15 civilians and 10 Afghan special forces were killed on Sunday.
