Baldur Gate 3 launched in early October, to be received with open arms by consumers. Critics, on the other hand, were less enthusiastic about the Early Access release, which left the game in a clearly unfinished and incomplete state. Now, Larian Studios is looping back with players, warning them that their saved games will not be compatible with newer versions of the game. Shortly after the game launched on October 6, Larian founder Swen Vincke seemed stunned by the reception of the game. “Now what are we going to do?” he openly meditated on Twitter, but he already clearly knew the answer – complete the game. While no final release date has been set, work continues at a steady pace. This means that major changes are underway to the fundamentals of the gameplay itself, as well as massive new sections of the storyline.
“Patch 3 […] is just around the corner, ”Larian announced Nov. 24 on Steam,“ and with that come the first changes that affect the story. Unfortunately, this means that Patch 3 will introduce the first save incompatibility, moving to the new version. “
In short, this means that the many hours players have spent playing the game will have to be wasted before they can upgrade to the next version of the game. There is a solution, however. Larian will keep the old version of the game as a “secondary branch”. Players can register for this branch through the options menu, where it will be listed as a beta titled “patch2”. Then they can play this branch for as long as they want.
“You can already move to the beta branch now, if you want to protect your backup file and continue on the current version,” Larian added. “Backup files are not ‘deleted’ from your computer; they will remain in your folder, but you will only be able to load backups specific to their respective versions. “
