Banning vegetation fire spreads to 200 acres, evacuation warning issued north of Hwy 243

A wildfire burning behind Banning High School has reached 200 acres.

The fire was first reported around 2:17 p.m. in Block 100 of West Westward Avenue, between the school and a KOA campground.

Cal Fire has confirmed that Banning High School and KOA Campground have been evacuated. Cal Fire has also issued evacuation warnings north of Highway 243, south of Charles Street, west of S. Hathaway Street, and east of San Gorgonio Avenue.

According to Cal Fire, West Westward Drive is closed between 12th Street and San Gorgonio. Route 243 was closed in both directions between Twin Pines and Old Banning / Idyllwild Road.

22 engine companies, 2 tankers and 1 helicopter are on site to try to contain the fire. We have a team on the way to gather more information and get the latest updates.
