LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A Lexington emergency doctor explains how he feels five days after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dr Mark Spanier works at Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington to treat patients with COVID-19 and other conditions. He said the last few months of working in the emergency room have been long, but getting the vaccine was the exact opposite.

“Once the vaccine was approved I was informed that I would receive it in about a week and it quickly moved on to, I was going to be one of the first recipients,” Dr. Spanier said.

He received his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Monday. He has not had any symptoms since, although some of his colleagues have had them.

“I heard there was a little pain in the arm and a person had a headache,” Dr. Spanier said.

He recommends that people plan in advance when they will be vaccinated.

“If you plan I think that’s probably the best way to do it, you’re not going to work the next day if you can avoid it,” he said.

Dr Spanier said that despite the mild side effects for some, getting the vaccine was a big step.

“It was really good to know that we are at the start of getting a handle on this thing,” he said.

He said he was not aware of any colleague in his unit who refused to fire. Instead, they lead by example.

“People are going to look on the internet and see that there is one theory or another that the government is trying to poison us, or someone is trying to hunt us down,” Dr Spanier said. “I think it’s much more important to see the people who have done the research know the risks and benefits of getting the vaccine and seeing them get the vaccine.”
