Ohio adds 4,262 cases and 88 more deaths. … January is recorded as the worst month for deaths in the United States from Covid, with more than 79,000 deaths, surpassing December’s record of more than 1,000.… Associated Press reports that the Portuguese Prime Minister has offered his people tired by the pandemic an anticipated Christmas present: the lifting of restrictions on gatherings and travel from December 23 to 26 so they can spend the holidays with their family and friends. But soon after, the pandemic quickly got out of hand. Today, Portugal has had the most daily cases and deaths per 100,000 people worldwide for almost a week, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University. … Indonesia confirms that infections have exceeded 1 million and that hospitals in some hard-hit areas are nearing capacity. It is the highest in Southeast Asia. The total number of deaths has reached 28,468. Hospitals in the world’s fourth most populous country are reaching almost 70% of their capacity nationwide. … The UK becomes the first European country to record 100,000 coronavirus-related deaths, with worldwide infections exceeding 100 million. … Baseball coach Ron Johnson dies of Covid. Johnson, who had a cup of coffee in the Majors in the 1980s, was successful in the minor leagues for 25 years. He was 64 years old.… Sekou Smith, journalist and NBA analyst for more than two decades, has died of Covid. He was 48 and worked for NBA TV and nba.com for over a decade.

Ohio adds 5,366 coronavirus cases and 75 deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 878,284. In addition, 2,944 people with Covid are in hospitals across the state, making it the seventh consecutive day of hospitalization below 3,500, which means the state will reduce the nighttime curfew, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.… In its weekly report, the Ohio Department of Health says the virus has claimed the lives of 177 additional patients from nursing homes and long-term care facilities across the state. This is the lowest number of new deaths in the department’s weekly reports since Dec. 2.… The Ohio Liquor Control Board revokes the liquor license of Barley House in Cleveland, effective March 24. regarding Covid several times.

The state reports 75 more deaths of people with coronavirus, bringing the total to 11,006. In addition, 5,432 new cases of coronavirus are recorded. … Eighty-four of Ohio’s 88 counties are on red alert for concerns about the spread of the virus this week. The only change from last week is the improved Alert Level for Hamilton County (Cincinnati) from Level 4 Purple to 83 other counties to Level 3 Red. … Novavax Inc. says its vaccine appears to be 89% effective and appears to work – but not as well – against newer mutated versions. … Two people in South Carolina are believed to have contracted the first US cases of Covid via a rapidly spreading form of the virus seen in South Africa. The two did not travel and did not know each other.

Johnson & Johnson’s long-awaited vaccine seems to protect all of a sudden. It’s not as strong as some two-dose doses, but potentially useful for a world that needs more doses.
