Reuters reports that thousands of people have demonstrated in Paris and other French cities against a mandatory coronavirus health pass for entry to many public places, introduced by the government as it battles a fourth wave of infections. It was the third weekend in a row that people opposed President Emmanuel MacronThe new Covid measures have taken to the streets, an unusual display of determination as many people focus on their summer vacation. … Actor Alvin ing, who has appeared on Broadway and in television shows, dies of Covid. He was 89 years old.

1st of August

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirms 3,058 cases daily, with the public concerned about an increase in infections during the Olympics, Kyodo News reports. In addition, the Japanese government is starting to administer Covid vaccines at two airports to citizens returning temporarily from abroad.

August 2nd

Cleveland Browns activate rookie linebacker Jérémie Owusu-Koramoah (photo above, top left) from the reserve / Covid list. The Browns selected Owusu-Koramoah in 51st overall in this year’s draft. … Cuyahoga County hits federal government threshold for “substantial” transmission of Covid, triggering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that everyone wear masks indoors. The county health board did not immediately respond to questions about whether the designation would trigger further guidance from local health authorities. … Covid vaccination rates are on the rise in Ohio, possibly in response to warnings that the unvaccinated are at risk of becoming ill with the highly transmissible Delta variant. As of Sunday, 59,693 people received a first dose last week. That’s 8,528 per day – the highest point since June 19. … Ohio State University announces that it would require all students, faculty and staff to wear masks indoors, regardless of their immunization status. … The United States is finally reaching President Joe Bidenthe target of at least one Covid shot on 70% of American adults – a month late and in the midst of a wave of the Delta variant that overwhelms hospitals and leads to new mask rules across the country . … Louisiana has ordered everyone – regardless of immunization status – to wear masks in all indoor public places. … The CDC adds 16 destinations to its “very high” Covid-19 risk level: Andorra, Curaçao, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Iran, Ireland, Isle of Man, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Libya, Malta, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy , Saint Martin and the US Virgin Islands. … US Senator Lindsey Graham (photo above, bottom right) from South Carolina says he tested positive for the coronavirus, months after being vaccinated. He is the first US senator to report a positive diagnosis after vaccination. … The World Health Organization says deaths from coronaviruses in Africa have increased rapidly over the past month, with the number of deaths increasing by 80% in four weeks.

August 3

Ohio is reporting 1,760 new cases – about five times the daily levels seen through late June / early July. … Summit County Public Health is issuing guidelines that everyone, including fully vaccinated people, should wear masks in indoor public places. … The Ohio Hospital Association, which represents 245 medical centers and 15 health systems, recommends that hospitals in Ohio independently adopt policies requiring coronavirus vaccines for all employees. … New York City will require proof of vaccination to enter all restaurants, fitness centers and indoor entertainment venues, Major Bill de Blasio announcement. … China is facing its worst outbreak in months, with more than 300 cases recorded in more than two dozen cities. The country has 144 medium and high risk areas, the highest number since the initial epidemic in early 2020, according to the National Health Commission.

August 4

Ohio is reporting 2,167 new cases – 10 times the level of cases a month ago. … Kent State University now requires indoor face coverings for everyone, regardless of immunization status, on all of its campuses. … From CNN: In New Offensive Against Federal Health Authorities, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Criticizes CDC advice that children – including those under the age of 12 who cannot yet be vaccinated – should wear masks in class. DeSantis is expected to be a candidate in the next Republican presidential primary if the former president Donald trump does not work. … Reuters reports that coronavirus cases worldwide exceed 200 million. … Chicago DJ and house music producer Paul johnson – which was UK No. 5 hit UK with ‘Get Get Down’ in 1999 – is dying of Covid. He was 50 years old. … JR Richard, who won 107 games in 10 seasons with the Houston Astros until a stroke prematurely ended his career, has died of Covid. He was 71 years old.

5 August

All Summa Health employees must be fully vaccinated against Covid by Sunday, October 31, and those who refuse could be disciplined or fired, the health system announces. … CNN reports that 49.8% of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid, citing CDC data. … Tokyo – home of the Summer Olympics – reports 5,042 new daily cases, a record.

August 6

The level of unvaccinated Ohioans who are hospitalized with the coronavirus is exponentially higher than vaccinated hospitalized patients – 98.4% to 1.6% since Jan. 1. Governor Mike DeWine said.
