POLAND – Rain, cold and windy.
It was perfect football weather Wednesday night, especially if you were a Polish Bulldog.
Starting like a storm, Poland (6-1-1) wasted no time finding the scoreboard at Dave Pavlansky Field en route to a 5-0 victory over Northeast-8 rival Lakeview.
More importantly, it gave a Polish side that have struggled with injuries all fall the opportunity to play as a unit, especially with their last game against Struthers consisting of just one half due to bad weather.
“Sometimes it’s hard, it’s the girls and how they come to play” Poland coach Neil Huda said. “If they come to play, or if they’re nonchalant, but once they kick in, we pick up the tempo and they do.
“I think they did well today, especially when passing the ball. I told them it was up to them to decide how far they wanted to go and how hard they played or how fast they wanted to play.
After missing several games to start her senior campaign, Mia Marantis found the back of the net over 15 yards in the opening six minutes of the game. It was the first of his two goals in the match.
“I thought we all played well as a team, even with the weather and all that. “ said Marantis. “In the end it got a bit complicated, but I thought that as a team we all played well. The fact that we’re all good friends on and off the pitch, we’ve been playing together since we were young and went to the same school together.
“I feel like it creates the chemistry on the pitch.”
Rookie Lucy Harrel scored soon after, followed by a goal ricocheted off senior Syda Masucci’s leg. Senior Avery Grischow threw a bomb more than 30 meters into the open field. Marantis completed the scoring in the first half, leaving the score 5-0 before half-time.
Running out of time herself this fall, Grischow stressed the importance of scoring early, but felt the second-half effort left a little to be desired.
“First of all, it’s going to put the other team’s heads down, it’s definitely going to get into their heads, and it’s easier for us to play and keep the momentum going. said Grischow. “I was really surprised how good the chemistry was, I thought we played really well at the top.
“I think Lakeview upped his intensity (in the second half). I think we started to give up once we knew the score was so high, I don’t think we played as well as we could have.

It boils down to showing improvement from one contest to the next, win or lose, especially for a team that includes seniors Amber Givens-Morrow, Kylie Matteoti, Gracey Stockton and ShayLynn Wall, but also eight underclassmen, with six juniors.
“Their (Poland) shots from a distance, they are impeccable, so bravo to them in all respects” Lakeview coach Marissa DeFrancesco said. “We just try to improve each time, it’s a rebuilding year for our program, but we’re cutting corners.
“All we talked about at halftime was making sure we walked on everything, trying to keep it as clean as possible with the body behind the ball instead of a leg because everything slips and slide, and they followed that, so I’m very happy with our performance in the second half.
