BBB officials warn of phone scam "A ring"

(LEX 18) – The Commercial Ethics Office warns residents to be wary of phone scam at "a bell".

FCC officials have stated that recalling who it is could result in a per minute charge (like "900" calls). According to the FCC, these calls use the country code "222" from Mauritania, a country in West Africa.

Generally, the "ringing" scam takes place when a calling caller calls a number and hangs up after a ring or two. They can call several times, hoping that the consumer recalls and pays a toll largely paid by the scammer.

"It's human nature to be quite annoyed and curious about a caller's origin in the middle of the night to be able to remember who he is," said Heather Clary, director of communications for BBB. serving central and eastern Kentucky. "However, in this case, it could be an expensive decision."

Tips for dealing with the "One Ring" call:

• DO NOT call back numbers that you do not recognize, especially those that appear to be coming from overseas.
• If you receive any of these calls, file a complaint with the FCC at www.fcc.gov/complaints and submit a report to BBB Scam Tracker at www.bbb. org / scamtracker. You can call BBB at (859) 259-1008 or 1-800-866-6668.
• If you never make international calls, consider contacting your phone company to block outgoing international calls in order to avoid accidental long distance calls.
