Colorado Parks and Wildlife warned the public of the importance of watching bear attractants again Thursday afternoon after a bear has spent much of the day in a tree in Littleton, Colorado.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the bear spent most of the day sleeping in a tree near Colorado 470 and S. Platte Canyon Road, a populated area near Chatfield State Park. Before the nap, the bear was seen munching on fruit from adjacent apple and peach trees.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife recommends picking the fruit before it ripens to avoid attracting bears. The ministry also recommends that fruit that falls to the ground be picked up rather than left to rot.

Bears are known to be quite flexible when it comes to their diet, ready to eat anything from meat to plants to trash. Those who live in bear country should pay close attention to any attractants on their property, doing their part to keep bears away.
In 2020, 4,943 bear reports were filed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, resulting in the euthanasia of 120 bears. Euthanasia is never the goal of wildlife officials, but is sometimes the result of a bear becoming too comfortable with humans, increasing the likelihood of a negative interaction between humans and the bear. Keeping food sources away from bears is one thing that can prevent this from happening.
