Beaumont Health cancels 1884 second-dose vaccine appointment due to unexpected low supply

STRAIT – Due to an unforeseen supply shortage, Beaumont Health cancels 1884 second dose appointments scheduled for Thursday, February 18.

According to Beaumont Health, he was informed on Friday of the significant reduction in the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine allocation by the state of Michigan.

“The health care system is working to automatically postpone all canceled appointments to one week later at the same time on the same day of the week, provided the state provides enough vaccines. Beaumont is also asking the state for more clarity on these second essential doses, ”reads a press release from Beaumont Health.

Most patients will receive an email if their appointment is canceled, but Beaumont will also attempt to contact other patients without an email address by phone.

“While three weeks is the typical time interval between two doses of Pfizer vaccine, the Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention says the vaccine remains effective when patients receive the second dose for up to six weeks after the first dose, ”the statement continued.

The healthcare system will no longer be able to schedule appointments for the first dose of Pfizer vaccine at the Beaumont service center until an additional vaccine is received.

Beaumont says he’s ready to give 50,000 doses per week, but this week will only be able to do 2,200, that’s all the state provided in its recent allocation.

The health system has administered more than 100,000 doses since the vaccine became available two months ago, he said.

“We are so disappointed that we had to cancel these appointments. Our teams worked around the clock and throughout the weekend with the state to try to get the second dose of vaccine we requested, ”said Carolyn Wilson, COO of Beaumont Health. “We remain committed to vaccinating patients as quickly as possible once we receive our assigned doses of vaccine.”
