Sky watchers could be feasted from Sunday evening through Monday morning as the celestial bodies align perfectly to create the beaver full moon with an early morning lunar eclipse.
Hardcore astronomers can set their alarms for 2:30 a.m. MT when the full moon, dubbed the beaver moon, passes through the partial shadow of Earth for a penumbra lunar eclipse, according to NASA. The eclipse will create a slight dimming of the moon and might be difficult to notice without a telescope, NASA said.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the beaver moon earned its name from Native American tribes and European settlers who set up beaver traps this time of year to ensure a warm supply of furs for the impending winter months.
Celestial otters can also look forward to the next geminid meteor shower, which NASA has ranked as one of the best meteor showers of the year. The meteor shower is expected to be active from December 4 to December 20, peaking on the night of December 13 to the morning of December 14.
Ideal viewing conditions include a dark location, a clear sky, and a clear view of the sky, NASA said.
