INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Remarkably, after 23 seasons in Indianapolis working seven days a week, Troy Glendenning of Lebanon, Indiana still treats every working day at Colts Complex as if it were his first.
Glendenning began his career with the Colts as a generic maintenance worker, where his main job was to pick up trash inside the Colts compound.
Quickly, he systematically raised his hand day and night for odd jobs on W. 56th street.
“Oh, I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” Glendenning said. “It’s sort of evolved – you get to know people… We took care of # 18s [Peyton Manning’s] Court. Mowing, mulched. Also, at the time, I was making crowd noise for every workout.
“I was there for three hours, and if you bumped into the noise of the crowd, all the players would instantly know my name. They were like, ‘Troy!’ “, he said.
The concert on the ground floor eventually led to the top position of the field team.
Glendenning’s focus and passion became keeping the team’s pristine practice ranges – elite talent in the Midwest.
“Monday we will mow first. To paint. Tuesday – do some more painting. Mow again. Irrigation every day. Mow every day. Practice on Wednesdays. Check the goal posts. Fill the irrigation heads. Put some sand in it, ”Glendenning said.
Glendenning’s hard work for the Colts Organization has not gone unnoticed.
In 2015, her home was broken into, with vandals taking her precious Colts memories with her dog.
But, in one of its darkest hours, the team pulled it off. Peyton Manning sent him signed Colts gear from Denver.
Gambler Pat McAfee and head trainer Chuck Pagano pledged $ 6,000 for a safe return of the dog, which was returned the next day.
After more than two decades of working for the Colts, this act of generosity still arouses strong emotions in Glendenning.
“Looking back, these are the great stories… because it’s a chore,” Glendenning said. “But when you can sit down and tell these stories, it’s amazing. I am a lucky guy. Look at the people I have met … This is a wonderful organization from the owner down. They take care of you.
McAfee got nothing but praise not just for Glendenning’s work on the training ground – especially given the Indiana weather – but for who he is as a person.
“The best turf keeper in the world,” said McAfee. “Troy Glendenning is one of the nicest humans ever, one of the hardest working humans ever and I was lucky to know him.”
It’s a Colt that laughs at the hours on the clock – a rare distinction reserved only for the greats of all time.
