On November 29, the Central Election Commission of Georgia summed up the second round of the presidential election after counting for 100% of the vote. Supported by the ruling party "Georgian Dream" Zurabishvili won 59.52% of the vote, Grigol Vashadze, supported by the Unified National Movement, got 40.48% of the votes of former President Mikhail Saakashvili.

In 2008, Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Russia following Moscow's recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
