Michael Dumas, 17, traveled to Florida in June with a religious organization. In the city of Pompano Beach, friends have "buried" in the sand on the beach.

The same night, the teenager became ill, he had itching and sweating. When he came home, the quirks did not stop. Soon he began to sleep almost all the time, he was sleepy when he was awake for more than a few hours. On Michael's back were some red cones. On his feet, there were marks that looked like scratches, although he was still wearing shoes.

At home, the teenager underwent several studies and was diagnosed with hookworm. The causal agent of this disease is the parasitic roundworm of the genus Ancylostoma (Ancylostoma).

It turned out that the other five boys on this trip also contracted hookworms. Now, Michael is treated. In addition to infecting the larvae, he was found to have Staphylococcus, his family has already spent more than $ 2,500 on treatment and care for a teenager.

Eggs with hookworm can be found in dog feces or cats. When they touch the ground, the larvae hatch from them. A person can pbad them through the skin when they come in contact with sand or contaminated soil. Parasites caught by cats or dogs usually stay on a person's skin, causing a disease called "migrating cutaneous larvae".

Parasites can leave large red traces on the skin that change as they move. Worms that are used to live in the body of animals do not usually live in the human body for a long time and die in 5-6 weeks without treatment. However, it is possible to get rid of them faster with the help of anthelmintic agents.

Belarussians usually bring migrating dermal larvae from tropical countries. They can be infected in the countries of Southeast Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Sri Lanka.

"The most important advice for tourists: always use beach shoes and do not lie on the sand. The larvae penetrate into that part of the skin that comes in contact with the sand", said Marina Ivanova, badociate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the State Medical University of Belarus, in an interview with TUT.BY.
