Compare the P30 Pro, the Galaxy S10 + and the iPhone with a $ 6,000 SLR camera and marvel at

[ad_1]

The camera is the main focus in this season's phones. Smartphones are gradually taking over new territories: an additional wide angle camera, a telephoto lens, a ToF sensor, a scanning space. Neural networks, formed with the best photos, give advice on composition, swell the blue sky and "correct" textures to noise. From pressing a button to a photo – hundreds of millions of mathematical operations. We compared the three most important handsets in the industry: the iPhone XS Max, the Samsung S10 + and the Huawei P30 Pro. How far are the camera results from the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Digital SLR for $ 6,000? The results will surprise you.

selfies

We start with the most popular folk genre – photos of yourself. This will help our employee Anastasia.

Fortunately, in 2019, smartphones coincide for the first time with the concept of skin tone. This has never happened. Only Samsung decided to "iron" the skin intensely according to Asian beauty standards, and the iPhone did not support indoor lighting and was forced to raise the ISO. The result was noisy. Huawei P30 Pro managed to keep details in the colors and, thanks to the resolution stock, it was possible to further define the scene as a whole.

Portrait

If the difference between the DSLR and the phone may be insignificant, then in the room, the weighing pan leans towards the camera with confidence. The noisiest and sharpest image of smartphones turned out to be Samsung. He also thanks for seeing the normal color of the wall in the scene. Huawei and the iPhone have been playing HDR games in different parts of the range: they both managed to bring out the barely noticeable warm hue of the wall in reality. The iPhone has removed all the contrast on the face and hair by lifting a black dot, while the Huawei P30 has done the opposite and has plunged the hair in the dark, as usually do Leica algorithms. As a result, these "shoals" or others have appeared, but, on a human level, the Samsung Galaxy S10 + is the most enjoyable option for us.

Color rendering

Compared to last year, the variation in shades between them has decreased, the main shades are almost indistinguishable. The most honest color rendering has turned out at Huawei, it also offers optimal contrast. Samsung preferred more saturated shades of blue and green. The iPhone as a whole is not bad, but it likes the rich yellow and is the only one to have added a greenish-white to a white cardboard. Of course, the element closest to a real image is Canon's EOS-1D X Mark II, which constitutes the visual standard in this comparison. The yellow and blue actually look exactly like a Canon camera.

Day light

Please note that there is a slight difference in the quality of the images in daylight between phones and the camera weighing about 2 kilograms. And this is a cropping of a small part of the frame, no one will ever see such photos with an intensity as we are now. Of course, the color and details of the SLR camera are second to none: all gradients are smooth and in some places even curtains can be considered. The Samsung S10 + is distinguished by the greater sharpness of the contours, it is the closest in this bundle of the concept of "detail". However, the phone has reached increased saturation (especially visible on the blue car). Sometimes, a sensation is even created, not at the level of the contours of objects, but because of an intense chromatic aberration.

Samsung is once again claiming to be the best camera phone for daytime shooting. Good contrast and detail allow Koreans to compete with a SLR camera. A slightly increased saturation of the shades of blue sky in this scene is very useful. In general, all the phones proved to be perfect. Once again, we are attentive: the rendering of color images becomes more and more unified. And we compare with a SLR camera and a lens priced at about $ 7,000 per set. Incredible times!

Night landscape

It's amazing the quality of full-frame SLR cameras and modern smartphones, even in the dark. Of course, at the least post-treatment, the 1D X will place them on the shoulder blades, but could we have imagined that the real expensive professional device to receive images "capture" the phone in your pocket? Visible is the "algorithmic" magic of Huawei, which provides a good picture in general, but can pinch the details and lose the finesse of the colors. Samsung has mostly kept the details in the highlighted letter A, the iPhone has given the most natural and moderately good photo for all items, but Huawei has created the most attractive photo. For the sake of justice, filming at night and in the dark is a subject apart that can not be solved at once.

Shooting documents and details

With the filming of documents, smartphones have reacted differently. Apple's flagship product honestly displayed the nuances of a translucent font from the previous pages, but gave a greenish color to the paper. "Chinese" involved a special mode for shooting documents. The Galaxy S10 + camera worked well, but its paper is yellow. The laws of physics still played against the SLR – a significant loss of sharpness on the edges is noticeable. There is no miracle, no matter how much your camera costs.

macro

The smallest zoom factor in our test group for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II with a 16-35 F2.8 III lens:

Work better with the iPhone XS MAX:

But the Samsung Galaxy S10 + is even better:

The Huawei P30 Pro Super Macro mode leaves no chance for anyone:

Big angle

As for the wide angle, the iPhone XS Max can be discontinued immediately. Samsung and Huawei have about the same results, but because of the original 16: 9 format, it was more widescreen. The viewing angle of the two is about the same.

Maximum hybrid zoom 10X

There is even nothing to say about the third telephoto lens of the Huawei P30 Pro with a focal length of 125 mm. Therefore, on a 10x hybrid zoom, it provides predictably better details and no artifacts.

Huawei P30 Pro

Huawei's flagship product currently ranks first in the DxO Mark. The Chinese smartphone has three cameras: a telephoto lens with a focal length of 125 mm, a wide angle camera and a 40 megapixel main module based on a 1 / 1.7 "CMOS matrix. Side by side, they match the ToF sensor, which they like to call the fourth camera. In fact, it is an auxiliary tool, but marketers will long be convinced otherwise. The phone is able to qualitatively transmit body tones (there is a margin for post-processing), it is characterized by incredible stabilization when shooting in low light, the best macro and the largest increase in group.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +

The Korean smartphone, thanks to its large aperture lens, gives bright, crisp and detailed photos, is very good in low light, in portrait and it separates well in selfie mode from the background. The phone sometimes tends to saturate. In most cases, his photos are the sharpest.

iPhone XS Max

For the second year in a row, the results of Apple do not please us On the background of Samsung and Huawei, the smartphone looks almost weaker, almost everywhere. You can rent the camera for its moderation and its naturalness … but everyone understands that we do it rather for past merits. If Huawei had received such a result, they would not have left a stone without a return.

Conclusion

In fact, this year has been a turning point for mobile photography. For the quality of photos on smartphones, do not worry: this is enough for all needs, except for post-processing. It is hard to imagine what innovations are waiting for us in the new generation of flagship products: everything has become too good.

Full frame cameras have long been at risk, and steps such as the release of full images at $ 1,300 are only a beginning. Survival is worth the SLR camera, as well as Canon, Nikon and Sony. This year, the professional equipment will have to offer something incredible: in optics, resolution, image quality, price. No more rest and let go of past results will not work.
