Currently, there are 7,000 of these doctors, Sergei Tylyandin, president of the Russian Society of Clinical Oncologists, told Izvestia.

"Help for the sick is now provided in regional clinics. Sometimes, from a remote region (for example in the Far East and Siberia) to the nearest oncology clinic, hundreds of kilometers away, "he added.

According to experts, it will take more than a decade to train experienced doctors. To fill the gap, they propose to modify the training system or to retrain workers in other medical fields.

Cancer is the second most common disease leading to the death of Russians. Last year, 289,000 people died of oncology.
