ITE Forum 2018: "It is better to write programs and not be replaced by a program"

Today, ITE 2018, also known as Information Technologies in Education, has started at the Falcon Club in the capital. Representatives of Belarusian universities, but also representatives of computer companies attended the event. Pavel Liber, senior director of software development at Epam Systems, spoke about cooperation with universities and the recycling of IT specialists.

Pavel recalled that EPAM organizes training courses in the field of information technology. Usually, the whole is composed of two hundred listeners. First, the courses are put online, then the personal lessons begin. According to the course results, about a quarter of business graduates are invited to work for themselves. What to do the rest? As the "computer girl" grows, there will be enough space for everyone. In addition, EPAM does not prepare specialists specifically "for themselves".

Interestingly, about half of the people who take training are not students. In the EPAM systems, this is because some professions are gradually disappearing and their visionary representatives are opening their rods. "It's better to write programs and not be replaced by a program"– Pavel noticed.

The courses cover well if a fifth of the demand for computer specialties. The solution here is integration with universities. Pavel says that IT companies sometimes try to replace schools and universities by themselves, while it will be more rational to work together. But there is a problem: universities are inert and can not modify programs by clicking ("they are relevant or not"), although it is desirable to do so.

The general conclusion is that educational institutions need to be more flexible and that IT companies should not create universities themselves. In the room there was a question: "How to bring children to the capital if they live two and a half hours from the roundabout?" They say that everything that has been said is good, but that it only concerns the inhabitants of Minsk, outside of which the computer age is less stubborn. Pavel advised to adapt programs in schools in the regions so that children can start learning, for example, an educational Scratch.
