Russian handball players in the preliminary round play in Group B with teams from Montenegro, Slovenia and France. In the next match, the Russian national team will meet the representatives of Montenegro on December 2, the same day the French meet the Slovenians.
The European Championship consists of 16 teams divided into four groups at the preliminary stage. The top three teams in each group will go to the next round of the group retaining the points earned in the matches against the teams that have pbaded.
The French team is the current world champion. The Russian and French teams played in the final at the 2016 Olympic Games.
The Russian national team did not win the European Championships: in 2000 and 2008, the Russians won the bronze medal and, in 2006, the silver. The championships of Europe in France will finish on December 16th.
