In February, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara would help prevent attacks by militants against the Russian military base Khmeimim in Syria.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow would not allow "terror reserves" in Syria to remain in place of the de-escalation zones. The ministry said the Idlib demilitarized zone, which Turkey is responsible for in particular, has not started to function fully.
