Winner of Startup Battle on medicine and your project

A week ago we had a final of Startup Battle – a contest of Onliner and Huawei. The jury, made up of representatives from Huawei, EPAM, Wargaming, 4I Lab, CopPay and EnCata, named the winner as a student project from Gomel State Medical University. Vladislav Volchek is working on a mobile application that trains future doctors in a fun way. The laureate came to tell his project with the candidate of the medical sciences, badociate professor of the department of oncology of the GSMU Sergey Anatolyevich Ivanov.

Why there is no specialty "diagnostician doctor"

Vladislav is now a fourth-year student and wants to become an oncologist surgeon. In the family, he says, some doctors, the choice of the job was obvious:

– Oncology is a cultivated field and the problem is urgent. The oncology is complete or not. Sooner or later, unfortunately, he expects a lot. The discipline is interesting, there is a lot to understand – biochemistry, physiopathology. Well, just a challenge.

The idea of the application is born from the fact that in medical universities, the diagnosis of diseases is the object of little attention. That's, the students know as treat, but does not really represent, what to determine the exact discomfort.

– In general, the idea was proposed by Sergei Anatolyevich: he stated that a familiar training should be reoriented to practice. Standard tests do not provide a comprehensive approach to solving a problem. Another thing is the tasks of the situation, where you can take into account all aspects of the diagnosis. This will help improve student training.

Sergey Anatolyevich stated that there is no specialty in medical diagnosis in the CIS: "Apparently, this is related to the organization of health care that, by inertia, continue to exist since the time of the Soviet Union. I think that the diagnostician is needed in large, well-equipped medical centers. In the case of small hospitals or even some regional hospitals, that would not be so requested. Figuratively, a diagnostician is a specialist who must have all the storage of instruments. Without such a pantry – and this is not everywhere – the meaning at the diagnostician practically disappears. "

– Are the diagnostician functions on the therapist?

– They are carried out alternately by doctors of different specialties: the local specialist often begins of course as a therapist, but there may be an endocrinologist, a dermatologist. Then the doctor starts the examination algorithm: the first limb turned out to be wrong, then we go back to the beginning and try another method. And so as not to wander for a long time in different branches, the training must be oriented towards practice. And here oncology practice is very useful.

"How is the diagnosis now?

– Oncology uses two diagnostic steps. First, we suspected a tumor in the patient's complaints and started an algorithm for this thread. It is somehow necessary to obtain a biopsy of the problem organ. This step is called the main diagnosis. We received confirmation that it is necessary to determine the extent of the prevalence of a tumor in the body, that is to say, to go to the stage of the diagnosis specification. Here, the algorithm is typical for cancer of almost all parts of the body: the lymph nodes, organs likely to present metastases are checked.

– If a biopsy is considered an accurate diagnostic method, why should not it be prescribed immediately at the slightest suspicion?

– This is a very expensive method, and it is not always justified. When there is no clear indication of a malignant tumor, then we suspect appendicitis to do a biopsy? Cancer is a rare disease. It represents less than 1% of all diseases. After all, a lot more flu, wounds, intestinal infections.

How does the application work?

In the case of the new teaching method, you can do without a mobile application. But this option is more practical and modern compared to paper-based design tasks. Practical quests in oncology consist of real data about the patient. From the point of view of confidentiality, everything is in order: on the one hand, no names, on the other hand, students from medical higher education institutions and thus examine these operations and study medical records.

– If we talk about pathology, there are typical moments that will be visible on badysis, X-rays, and so on. In a purely formal way, you can do without real patient data. If using them is an open question. Even after receiving the consent of the patient, we can not take this information. Strange, yes? In fact, the information belongs to the medical institution that performed the examination, – said Vladislav.

The Associate Professor and the student first wanted to perform the appropriate tasks that would facilitate the actual preparation of the students and would not simply be a waste of time in boring presentations. First of all, the developers had to highlight the criteria common to patients and divide them into groups:

– Our part of the work – training and digitization of the database. We then turned to a specialist who created the skeleton of the application. In the future, we will impose clinical cases on this basis. I am not a programmer and I should not be – I want to become a doctor. But somewhere I had to do programming.

The technical problems of application development are dealt with by the university department, while the general concept is based on Vladislav and Sergey Anatolyevich. The authors of the project point out that Practical Oncology is not just a test with answer options: "You have facts to learn."

Suppose that a description of the symptoms and complaints of the patient is in progress and that you need to establish an accurate diagnosis. A set of tools is at your disposal: X-ray, MRI, blood test, biopsy, etc. Of course, the most obvious is to use everything consecutively, but it is long, expensive and impractical. The doctor must therefore select the most effective options based on the information provided. Let's say, we did a biopsy – we had a clever set of abbreviations and terms. A hard-working student will understand these data himself, but if you are too lazy, you can buy (for the game currency) a transcript.

Third year disease

When diagnosing oncology, say the developers, speed is of paramount importance. The sooner the patient turns around, the higher the probability of detecting the disease is early – and the student must understand the responsibility for the correct choice of diagnosis.

The application is already interested in some educational institutions. Since oncology disease diagnostic methods are generally similar worldwide, Practical Oncology can be used in other countries for the benefit of universities.

– The application is educational, but when it appears in the public domain, it will not be downloaded only by students and doctors. Do not you think people will suspect symptoms of missing diseases?

– There is an alleged third-order disease: when a man gets pregnant, everyone is diagnosed with lung cancer, schizophrenia, and so on. What subject they went through – they found the disease in themselves. In fact, if you want to find a symptom of a disease in you, you will certainly find it, even in good health. Who had no dizziness, dry eyes? Oh, so these are the symptoms of an infectious disease.

Vladislav has been practicing practical oncology for about four months. The guy admitted that he had applied for the Startup Battle Contest without any particular plan: he read Onliner every day and checked orders through our Onliner service, which earned him an extra salary as a graphic designer. And during the final of the competition, it appeared that Vladislav had also participated in another contest of Onliner and Huawei – and had also won the prize. This time, the creator of Practical Oncology has received 6000 rubles for the development of the project and the prices of Huawei.

Huawei also marked another project with the gift – Educational News, which is dedicated to the learning of English through publications in the media. Vadim Sosnovsky, technical director of the smart home project, Huawei Belarus, commented on this choice:

– Today, many invest in learning, including foreign language learning. Their knowledge and ability to understand the interlocutor and information from a foreign language are already a necessity. This is particularly felt in large companies or international companies.

Among the many language learning techniques, reading and listening to texts remain the most effective. The application of educational news solves these problems. It determines the user's English language level, then offers him materials – news – at a level that he can understand. Levels can be modified by taking into account progress in learning a foreign language and making tasks a little more difficult. In this way, you can improve your knowledge.

Of course, it was very difficult for us to choose a winner. Nevertheless, from the point of view of the "life-enhancing" project, the Educational News educational startup best fits the underlying idea, and the application itself may be of interest to many international companies, including understood us. In a conversation, the project manager said the planned exit was scheduled for late April – early May. We hope everything goes well.
